When she died, Mumtaz Mahal's body was kept for six months at the Zainabad garden at Burhanpur. It was then transferred to Agra where a piece of land was selected for her burial. This is where the Taj now stands.
Although Shah Jahan recovered, his solace in religion led to an order to destroy all new Hindu temples throughout his empire. He also attacked the Portuguese in Bengal. Although his dislike of the European presence in India was well known, it is said the Portuguese had angered him in a number of ways, including abducting some women who were close to his dead wife. Shah Jahan took some 4,000 prisoners, mostly Christian, and forced them to convert to Islam.
